About Sitka, Alaska

Sitka is a wild little coastal town that’s nestled perfectly in the Southeast Passage of Alaska’s waterways. The town was originally settled by the Tlingit people over 10,000 years ago. It’s only accessible by boat and plane. It has it’s own volcano, Mount Edgecume is 13 miles west that everyone in town has a view of. The volcano hasn’t erupted in a long time. But there are Tsunami evacuation signs throughout town to help people get to higher ground in case there is major activity.

Sitka is where the Alaskan Purchase happened and was once the capital of Alaska before it was moved to Juneau, a town not far away. Just like it always has been, Sitka is home to major culture, fishing, and wildlife. With only around 8,000 population and 12 miles of paved roads it’s quite a small place. But it boasts huge adventure and the big outdoors and draws people from all over the world for its fishing, natural beauty, and mountains. Cruise ships come to port in Sitka almost every day and the town streets are filled with the hustle and bustle of way too many people. So if you see an upset local who can’t drive to his favorite pub anymore because the street is now blocked off for tourists, just be nice haha.
